How businesses get listed

Businesses appear in the local directory in one of three ways: they are imported from public Google Maps business data, a business owner adds or claims a listing, or our editors add a place they have researched. Every business is placed in exactly one main category using a fixed mapping table, so the same business never appears under an invented or duplicated category.

Listing is free. An enhanced listing is a paid option that lets an owner add their own description and details. Paying never changes where a business appears in our ordering, and it never changes how we describe it.

Imported listings awaiting review

Most listings currently come from Google Maps data and have not yet been reviewed by an editor. They show only what the data contains: name, address, phone, website, opening hours, rating and review count, and a photo where one exists. We do not write descriptions, facilities or history for these listings until they have been checked. Records with too little verified information are kept out of search engines until they are reviewed. Ratings and review counts belong to Google users, not to Yarm.co.uk.

How we check facts

• We never invent a business, price, rating, review, opening time or event.
• Facts that change, such as opening hours, parking charges and transport times, are stored with a source and the date they were last checked.
• History, transport and public-service details are checked against primary sources such as councils, operators and archives.
• Every guide is written by one editor and checked by a second before it is published.
• Photos are credited, and we only use images we have the right to use.

Corrections and complaints

If something on the site is wrong, out of date or unfair, please contact us with the page address and what needs changing. We will look into every report we receive. Confirmed factual errors are corrected and the page's checked date is updated. Business owners can ask for their details to be changed or removed.
